Last week, on their second attempt, House Republicans impeached Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, ostensibly for the crisis at the U.S.-Mexico border by a single vote. The margin was 214-213. Mayorkas is only the second Cabinet official to be impeached in American history, with the first being Secretary of War William Belknap in 1876.
Belknap was impeached a few hours after he resigned Grant’s administration for corruption. He would go on to be acquitted in the Senate. Senate Majority Leader Schumer has stated that the trial would begin in the next few weeks. Speaker Johnson has named his impeachment managers: Mark Green (TN), Michael McCaul (TX), Andy Biggs (AZ), Clay Higgins (LA), Ben Cline (VA), Michael Guest (MS), Andrew Garbarino (NY), Marjorie Taylor Greene (GA), August Pfluger (TX), Harriet Hageman (WY), and Laurel Lee (FL).
