The first observance of Memorial Day was on May 30, 1868, directed by General John Logan. It was first called “Decoration Day” as the call was to decorate the graves of fallen soldiers from the Civil War. Over 5000 people turned out at Arlington to pay homage to those who gave the ultimate sacrifice.
